Sammy is a great humble teacher. He treats everyone with respect and has patience for teaching. If your willing to do your part he’s more than willing to do his. You can tell he really enjoys what he does. He doesn’t make you feel like a number. He’s not a clock watcher and doesn’t kick you out of the gym when your time is up. He’s always willing to go over technique with you one on one if you didn’t understand something. His Son and Daughter are very respectful and always willing to help the other students. He runs a structured program which works well to keep out ego’s. I feel very lucky and privileged that my family and I can learn from Sammy.

Sensei Sammy teaches very advanced Jiu-Jitsu and it shows. No other school trains as hard as we do. He makes sure to go out the box when teaching. The dojo has brand new Matts and it’s a very clean enviroment. Everyone has a great attitude and No Ego’s! The kids program is great and they have lots of fun learning new techniques. I highly recommend this place. If you are interested in learning from the best, then this place is for you.

This is for ANYONE considering signing up for a year let alone a month at this gym. History in the past year, Rodrigo, the founder and owner of this school left to Brasil and and around the world to tour and teach his style of jiu jitsu. Rodrigo is an absolutely beautiful human being and a hell of an example on and off the mat, save for him leaving his school to such an imbecile like Sammy Garcia. Sammy has kicked out at least 50% of all the vets who were here since the beginning due to the following; encouraging comrades during rolls, helping new members with techniques due to their very little knowledge of the art, being injured, not bowing down to him before greeting any body else, not “respecting” his daughter who VERY poorly handles all the paperwork of the business..the ridiculous list goes on and on. Thus far, 4 black belts have either gotten kicked out or left volluntarily in the past 6 months, 8 purple belts, and number of lower belts. In the next two weeks 6 of us, higher and lower belts will be leaving this school due to Sammy’s egotistical attitude and personality incompetancies. Please, any new member be weary of the contracts. This is NOT a school that is run by a man who is in it for the love of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, this has become a school run by a man who is it it for the money and business aspect of jiu jitsu. Don’t believe me? Go ahead and do a free trial in the beginners class then the advanced. See how HIS beginners classes (which are ALL his students that he recruited himself) react to him, what he demands them to do, and see how his upper belts who are Rodrigo’s students treat one another and him. Notice how he spends most of his time coaching his daughter while neglecting the rest of his class. Ask around who gets favoritism packages and prices and how much he’s about to charge you. Pay attention to his attitude when somebody asks a question, oh yea! He’s kicked out a number of students because they “ASK TOO MANY QUESTIONS” including two children. ASK YOURSELF, is this where I want my art to grow? Is he a good leader? And you will find, this comment I am leaving has saved you hundreds of dollars and time. Check out the surrounding gyms in this area as well. Do NOT settle here, do NOT make this gym your home. Cia Paulista, Checkmat La Habra, Total Zen, Mt. Sac.. grip of places to check out. Don’t settle! Lots of love in your jiu jitsu journeys!

This BJJ gym is great! I’ve been training here for a little over a year. and I’ve learned so much from my instructor (Sammy Garcia). He’s always willing to teach you…”when you’re willing to learn”. My two little boys also train here; he treats my boys with respect and challenges both of them to be the best they can be. He’s encouraging and motivates his students to “believe in themselves”. I believe: “The only thing standing between me and winning is ME” and I learned this through my instructor (Sammy Garcia). My sparring partners are awesome!!!! As a female, its challenging trying to fit-in in a Male-Dominated sport, but I feel real comfortable around these guys (like the brothers I never had) and of course THE LADIES at our gym are even COOLER 🙂 I AM SIGNING OFF WITH THESE INSPIRING QUOTES! “Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you as by the ATTITUDE you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as by the way your mind looks at what happens. ” “Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure. The way you think about a fact may defeat you before you ever do anything about it. You are overcome by the fact because you think you are. ” “Somewhere behind the athlete you’ve become, the hours of practice, the coaches who push you, and the fans who cheer for you, is the little girl who fell in love with the sport and never looked back.” “Champions aren’t made in the gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them — a desire, a dream, a vision. ”

I’ve been with Sensei Sammy Garcia for over 3 years. When I first started I couldn’t even do an Arm Bar. His commitment and dedication to his students goes a long way. He has taught me so much, that I’ve won Gold at the LA International, Silver at the NYC Open, Bronze the NABJJF No Gi and Silver at the 2013 PAN AM’s. If you are looking for a MAC DOJO, than this isn’t the place for you. There is a Burger King down the street where you can get it your way. Sammy will do his part, but it’s up to you where you want to take it. Jiu Jitsu is about Attitude, Brotherhood, Confidence, Dedication, Discipline, Respect, Honor, Focus, Integrity and most of all Courage. If you are spoiled brat and have had it your way through your spoiled life, than this isn’t the place for you. This place is for people who want to train and learn Jiu Jitsu. Water cooler talk is at the office. I couldn’t be any happier and in better shape than what I am now. Oh and before I forget, my kids train here too and they are both winners!! Peace out!!

Sammy is a great person and a great instructor. If you are looking for a bjjinstructor who teaches solid fundamentals he is great. If you are looking for a gym where you can bs and hook up with guys or girls, keep looking. The above person who wrote the flaming review i doubt has ever taken bjj seriously meaning competed or been consistent about trainig. If you expect preferential treatment or extra helpwhen you show up 3 times a month, look somewhere else. I am a 3 stripe purple belt, my instructor Rodrigo Teixeira left shortly after giving me my purple belt to spread the art so Sammy coached and helped me in his abscence, the result I have won many titles in my journey as a purple belt under Sammy including 2 ibjjf world championships in gi and no gi and also many podium trips for my 2 daughters who also compete. I will always be eternally greatful for the positive experiences my family and I Sammy has taken part in. If you want to train and wprk hard and have goals in bjj this is a great place. If you are looking to bs and hook up and be a tap out poser type guy prmgirl, join 24 hour fitness……Ossss

I love this gym, I hail from Arizona where I trained with an amazing instructor. I had high expectations for the next gym I would join. I was not disappointed. I only trained in nogi, so when I started training out here, being in a gi was like a whole new world. I was treated with respect and welcomed right off the bat. Even though coach Sammy had just met me, he was very willing to help me continue to practice, considering I’m a broke ass college graduate. I’m very grateful to have the opportunities that I have here. Coach Sammy goes out of his way to show me new techniques, its a matter of asking and just training enough for him to notice what your style is and what your go to moves are. Just like how my coach in Arizona would do. I understand that from an instructors point of view, he wont always be able to watch every student, he wont always be able to catch you making a mistake, but if you show up, train hard, and show him that you’re serious, he will notice. If his continuance to train with a knee he just had surgery on a few months ago is not proof enough of his love for the sport, then i don’t know what is. But this guy is awesome and the gym is just as awesome. I’m proud to be a part of it.

This guy is a joke. he says that you are not loyal to the academy if you train at other gyms?? whats the point of training and learning if i can only learn from one instructor? Sammy doesnt know everything (no disrespect) but the way he goes about things, how he teaches, holds himself as if he is a GOD, tries to intimidate people, yells at them and scolds them for helping out other students and takes things so personally is total bullshit. we had a great team, a great family, and a stronger bond with Rodrigo. Sammy came in, and we all gave him the benefit of the doubt and tried to work with him, but its hard when this guy is so stubborn and makes himself the victim because he had a tough life as a child and adolescent. And this is my fault how? he kicked out all the black belts and brown belts, half the school is gone, and now all we have are a few purple and blue belts, one brown belt, and a lot of white belts. THIS IS NO ACADEMY TO GO TO IF SAMMY TEACHES… WAIT FOR RODRIGO!!! You can learn more stuff off the internet than from him. Go To Any Affiliated School Of Rodrigo Teixeira, : Warriors Club In Diamond Bar & Warriors Club In Burbank With James Lawson, Higher Ground BJJ In Rowland Heights With Julio Lang & Sean Fernandez, Pedro Carvalho BJJ (Rodrigo Brother) In Upland/Ontario With Matt Flores & Nikki Horton, ParaBellum BJJ In Pasadena With Matt Parks, Chalk Fitness BJJ In Placentia With Marco Alvarado!! Any Of These Places Will Be Way Better Than Sammy Garcia!!!

also, Sammy daughter, Rachel, is a joke too. she is one of the rudest and snobbiest persons I have ever met. she is not a good teacher, not a good practitioner, and not a good role model. and she talks so much shit about people, its ridiculous. also who did leave her in charge of the financial stuff that has to do with the gym?

To Angelo: I am a black belt that has knew Rodrigo since he was 15. I get a laugh about you saying i do not take bjj seriously, havent competed, or train consistently. thats a HUGE joke right there. I have put more into bjj than you will ever understand. and quite frankly, im not impressed by what you bring to the mats. I will say though, you are the most highly motivated at the gym, and you should take a lot of pride in that right there. but let me leave off with this, Do you really think that everyone who had been kicked out or left were really in the wrong? That Sammy is the innocent one? the victim? That the gym has been better with Sammy in charge? It breaks my heart now when all I hear now is how Sammy drove that academy to the ground… Hopefully though Rodrigo will come back and bring it back to life.

To “NO” I think your full of shit. If you are who you say you are you can only be one of 5 people and I personally know all 5 and trust me they would be man or woman enough to poat there name. Grow up white belt…seriously or at the very least honor the “black belt” you say you have, or tell us all your real name, Have the guts to at least do that as I did if you’re going to call me out. Just so you know, those 5 people would not be aware of the stuff you are slandering nor would would they be immature to do that. The only joke here is you, instead of slandering people, you should go humble yourself, and if this is whom I think it is.I understand where your anger comes from, I would be angry too but you should spend any extra time you have working on your ash tray pock scared complexion it makes you an uglier person than you are on the inside. Also if you feel the need to call me a joke, grab my number from the people you say you know. I would be more than happy to defend my honor in person anywhere you would like. Dont try and speak like you have put in time building something you never did any of the heavy lifting for. I did my work and my part honoring Rodrigo, Sammy and all of my brothers I trained with, WTF have you done? 6 months of bs training? Real contribution.

As a student of both Rodrigo and Sammy I have to say they are two different people with two different personalities. Both people in my opinion are great individuals. Both have their own styles. Problem I seem to notice here is “change” no one likes “change” its normal. Some people adapt and look at the bright side of things and some just can’t adapt to change and look at the negative side. Some people are followers some people are leaders. No one is expected to like change but one thing I have learned from BJJ and both Rodrigo and Sammy is RESPECT your teammates , instructors and the Gentle Art. We all know Sammy was left in charge by Rodrigo for a reason, and as Rodrigo’s student I feel I should honor Rodrigos descion. I think Sammy is doing a great job and has shown me (and many others) a great deal of technique which he learned from Rodrigo. I have never witnessed these accusations mentioned above and I train often. We should also keep in mind there are two sides to every story. We are all there to learn and there by choice, if I decide to leave one day for whatever reason I for one would not burn my bridges. I’ve learned this lesson by watching people make this mistake over and over. It usually comes back to bite you in the a$$.I would also never insult someone on a public forum without being willing to insult them in front of their face. Its just not right. Guess its just my age and old school mentality. Bottom line here is Sammy and Rodrigo are both Great Instructors and I would encourage everyone to come in and train and make your own descion. You won’t be dissapointed.

My Name is Rodrigo Teixeira and together with Sammy we’ve been running the School for the last year. I’ve been absent physically as i’ve been traveling the world to spread the knowledge that was given to me with others, but me and Sammy always talk and discuss on how we could improve on the quality of jiu Jitsu at our gym. A lot of changes have been made and all those changes were made to give the best we can… When I started my trip there was a need of change. We had a very loose environment at the gym and some people took advantage of that to make the gym look like a nightclub, coming whenever they wanted and not paying attention to class as they should’ve as if they were red belts! As they say, sometimes people take kindness for weakness… That was really bad on the people that took it seriously and needed structure. When I made the decision to do my trip the first person that came to mind was Sammy. Not only he is an excellent professor that is always looking for new ways to improve his game and is always at the competitions supporting his students but also a very responsible person and an amazing dad that I’ve always looked up to. As much as we try, we cannot make everybody happy. For some people adjusting to a new set of rules can be very hard and I understand we all need different things. What I don’t understand is the lack of respect and appreciation.

I’ve trained here and at surrounding gyms for the past year or so. I’ve heard nothing but bitterly unpleasant things about Sammy, and have experienced the unprofessional and disgraceful personality of his that many of the people here are referring to. I was going to go under contract last year for 105 a month, then I thought about it again and he has risen the price up to 145 a month with fewer classes and very few higher belts to roll with or learn from due to him kicking out 4-5 black belts and a ton of lower belts. I’m extremely close to one of the lower belts that just left due to how bad Sammy’s power trip was affecting the jiu jitssu and the spirit of the rolling sessions. I’ve heard so many stories of Sammy bullying little kids, kicking them out, raising his voice at his students and demanding their respect to him and his daughter. It is true, he has allowed her to run all of the financial part of the gym along with all of the confidential paperwork of the members. The spirit at this academy is not what it used to be. If you come to any surrounding academy you will hear nothing but bad things about this particular one. And I do believe it has everything to do with how much Sammy has damaged the family here because of his ego and his daughters unprofessional behavior with some of the male members and her administrative skills. Like the members above said, wait for Rodrigo, or don’t go to Sammy’s gym at all. Pretty soon, all the white belts will begin to observe how disgraceful Sammy is, and they too will leave. Only a matter of time.

Not to make this gym look any worse! I think the upset former members are doing an awesome job at expressing their dissatisfaction and hurt with the way Sammy has run Rodrigo’s academy, and honestly they seem pretty damn accurate! I’d like to point out this! Gino, you look like a pompous coward pointing fingers on this website and threatening white and black belts. How disrespectful can you be?? Whether a white, brown, blue, black white belt wrote the above reviews does not make it ok for you to lash out like this. You shame yourself by being so unnecessarily aggressive and boastful about your accomplishments and your relationship with this academy and Sammy. If I’m not mistaken did you not leave this gym not too long ago because of Sammy humiliating and kicking out a black belt? Did you not already say your farewells to this academy because of Sammy’s behavior?? Very hypocritical of you. You’re personality is a mirror image of Sammy’s, and you’ve shamed me, the academy, and yourself by posting your comments. This is a perfect example of how not to act as a man and as a brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner.

Mr. FORMER MEMBER. Your a riot, thanks for the compliments though I r3ally appreciate it.just so you know I’ve earned the right to voice my accolaids because i worked hard for them. Wtf have you done? People on here just to tear others down, but some of is aren’t afraid of voicing our opinions publicly. I dont care what color belt you wear if your a piece of shit and a coward who is dispectful hiding behind a computer, you’ll receive disrespect in return. Respect those who respect you in return, first lesson I learned from Rodrigo Teixeira. If you took the time to read through the thread, you’ll see I simply called out the person who called me out. Take it how you will your a coward and a fraud, like I said every4hing you said about me is true, thank you…i appreciate it. Too bad for you you’ll never get it. Btw talkimg shit about the academy is talking shit about all of us starting with Rodrigo. There is a difference between voicing your opinion and attacking someone. Attacking Sammy or anyone else is the same thing as attacking Rodrigo who you say you care about. Bunch of little kids with no honor or back bone. Grow up and grow a pair. But do us all a favor, quit jiu jitsu because you are doing nothing more than tainting the bjj gene pool. Like I said before, you want to call me out you have an issue with me, grab my number, anywhere you want. Like I said be glad to defend my honor in person.

Thats someones daughter and i feel bad for the carma coming your way. Whatever happens to you, you deserve that x10. Your a real POS and youarent worthy of practicing jiu jitsu. Also dont know if you are aware, but there are tools to do a reverse look up on ip addresses for pcs or mobile devices, so pretty soon we will all know exactly who you are. You should have had the balls to put down your name like I did, because either way your REAL name is on every post voluntary or not. Dont ever say anythng anonymously you wouldnt say to someones face. Because sooner or later you will be held accountable

I have no idea what is going on nor do i want to be part of any of this drama. please leave my name out of this. i made my peace with the gym and everyone else at the gym as well. i am friends with everyone and have no enemies nor do i want any enemies. it does suck what happened to the gym and all the unfortunate events that happened as well. i am sorry it had to come to this as i am torn because i want to train only under Rodrigo Teixeira. i had my fallouts and my ups and downs and my own drama but all of that stuff i put aside. it is just not worth it to me. i rather keep everyones friendship whether we train together or not. I STILL CONSIDER EVERYONE AT RODRIGOS MY FAMILY, MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS, AND ALL OF YOU WILL BE THE FIRST TO BE CALLED WHEN WE HAVE GET-TOGETHERs, I LOVE AND MISS YOU ALL!! i only wish everyone the best on their jiu jitsu journey.

How would Rodrigo feel if he read all of this? Ask yourself that. I’m not one of the higher belts, nor would I consider myself one of the best or brightest from the gym, but I am about Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. What here exemplifies what Rodrigo has passed on to us? What here represents the gentle art? I understand that people don’t get along. I understand the reason for name-calling and slander. I understand that some people feel mistreated, misunderstood, and wronged, but what place does any of that have in Jiu Jitsu. This art is a lifestyle, for Rodrigo has shown us this with his life. He is away for that very reason. I respect everyone at the gym. I respect my comrades. I respect those who welcomed me warmly when I arrived on a new coast with no family or friends to support me. Why are we provoking one another?

For everyone leaving negative comments under pseudonyms: This is a pathetic and immature way to address problems you may have with anyone. Stop being cowards and say what you need to say in person. I’m assuming were all adults here. It is really sad that people who had a bad experience due to their own actions have to try and ruin the experience for everyone else. Coming to class late, not doing the warm-ups, and refusing to practice with different teammates will never help anyone progress, AT ANY GYM. I feel that the people who have negative things to say about the way the gym is being run need to figure out what a commitment is. It’s not having the freedom to come and go whenever you please. I’m going to guess that none of you do this when it comes to college classes you are serious about or careers you may have. Sammy teaches discipline; something some of you people appear to never have learned as kids or have lost along the way. This website is simply to rate your bjj instructor, not to personally attack them or their family members. Sammy Garcia and his daughter Rachel have been nothing but helpful to anyone who is committed to learning the sport. The instructors do their part and its up to the student to do theirs. If you genuinely are there to learn, Sammy and Rachel are always more than willing to help you out. I have only been training since January but I feel I already have come a long way because of the coaching I have received at the Teixeira-Garcia gym. I am very confident that anything I struggle with they would be more than happy to guide me through it. For those of you who have a loyalty to Rodrigo, do you really think he would choose someone who wasn’t qualified to run his gym? I’m betting not. Basically the rumors and drama that have been posted all over this site should stop. Learning the art of jiu jitsu should be a pleasant experience. Each individual should try this gym out for themselves and decide whether or not this is where they want to train based on their own experience, not what other people write. Negative people shouldn’t ruin the positive aura of the gym for everyone else. If you don’t like it, leave it and move on. Obviously Rachel and Sammy are above this. Leave your professional opinion of the instructor and save the drama for a time when you’re willing to stop hiding behind the anonymity and tell it like it is.

If you feel the need to talk about me in a negative matter anonymously I feel bad for you. If you have to make up rumors about me you are pathetic, unlike you Priscilla I have respect for myself and my body. Why do you care so much about my life? The fact that your older then me and handle situations this immaturely is ridiculous. If you have a problem with me let me know instead of having grown men defend you and hiding behind a computer screen. I don’t remember asking for your opinion about whether I’m a good coach, Jiu Jitsu practitioner or employee nor do I care about your opinion. I have no respect for a white belt who throws herself at every human that walks by, can’t show up to class on time, participate in the warm ups or step on the mat without wanting a private session with every partner. You call yourself a Jiu Jitsu specialist at gold gym? What are your credentials? Learning to tie your belt? Blogging about Jiu Jitsu and buying a shoyoroll gi isn’t going to make you better, try putting in years on the mat before you tell me anything about Jiu Jitsu. Our academy isn’t a place for you to hook up try craigslist or You are a coward for not saying any of this to my face and hiding behind a computer screen. If you find it that difficult to treat me with respect that’s fine but don’t cry when you don’t receive it. If your going to write or say something about me that’s fine but be prepared to receive it right back, and unlike you I wont do it anonymously. You sure are quick to point fingers but have you looked in the mirror? Who are you to judge me? I find it quite flattering that you go out of your to talk about me so thank you.

I just discovered yelp and online reviews etc., and now I’m going on a rate everything and everybody in the universe spree! I came here for 5 sessions, I paid for one month with Sammy and Rachel. I’m here to leave an honest review about Sammy as an instructor. He was really awesome and inspiring when I first signed up, and so was Rachel. I didn’t continue with them because of the prices. I had hung out with some of the new people and old people there and all of the them gave me different prices that they were paying. Like the old people were only paying $105.00-$135.00, and some of them that I guess were really close to Sammy were paying as low as $80. But Sammy wanted me to pay $165.00 every month because I was a white belt with no experience. I kept going for the month that i paid for but kept looking elsewhere for better prices and an instructor who didn’t give different prices to everybody. The review above is right about how the beginners classes and the advanced classes are run. The advanced classes were a little bit more, happy because the people their were really easy going and helpful. But all the new students in the beginners classes were like bowing down to Sammy and Rachel, and it was way stricter. It just came off weird when I noticed Sammy coaching Rachel a lot and forgetting the rest of us. I also saw him blatantly ignore a white belt girl in the advanced classes a couple of times. And I saw him snap at alot of guys for helping me out when I made some stupid mistake. The thing that really threw me off was when he took me to his office and told me I need to stop asking so many questions because its a distraction and it gets his serious jiu jitsu competitors in trouble for teaching in his classes. He just didn’t want anybody not serious about jiu jitsu in his school. This was all in only one month of training there. The rest is history. I train at Millenia now, and it’s way better here. It does seem like Sammy really destroyed that school, and he’s really upset alot of people there. Good luck to everybody who takes the risk here. -Jessica

I followed Sammy from his gym in West Covina to Covina last year because I liked how strict it was. I thought it would teach my sister a good lesson and it was pretty decent conditioning for me too. I did take into account how pissed off it made the vets at Rodrigos school, he completely took over the business. Sammy has a very hard demeanor, it’s straight forward and he has a no bullshit personality. I can see how some people can take that out of context. I was there to see some people hate on him, and I was there to see him hate on his students. Don’t get me wrong, Sammy is a great instructor. He’s nailed all the fundamentals but that is where his instruction ends. He’s getting old and his maneuvers aren’t so smooth as they were 10 years ago. His teaching is really limited because his bad knee, so he leaves his classes mainly up to his purple belt daughter and other black belts. When he does teach it’s pretty much reiterations of the same techniques we’ve learned in the past. I never really learned how to build from one submission or technique, and if we weren’t learning the same things over and over again-he had us practicing throws the entire class. I felt cheated, and I felt like I was being robbed from my money every time I paid the next months membership. I ended up leaving after he made my friend cry after a nogi class. Rachel, Sammy’s daughter is actually defaming her above. It’s for sure not making Sammy look any better or the school. I have no idea what happened with everybody else that Sammy has pissed off but i do know what happened to my friend and I had enough when I saw her leaving Sammy’s office in tears. I heard the things Rachel and Sammy were telling her, and I heard Sammy almost yelling at her threatening to kick her out of the school if she didn’t learn how to respect his daughter and other higher belts. She told me everything that happened and after that I left. I didn’t want me or my sister training there any more because I knew what he had done to my friend and I knew I didn’t want to expose my sister to Rachel or Sammy because their bad attitudes. It’s not Sammy’s technique that pushed me away, nor was it how strict he was, it was his attitude towards his students. Like we had to earn his respect and his teaching and I thought his unapproachable demeanor was really sick. So I bounced, and it was a great decision for us. The only fucked up part now, is I don’t have a solid place to train with as low prices as he had for us. It’s the cheapest gym around, but you get what you pay for here. Scratch that much less actually. Unless, he has some legit black belts training there now but his and Rachels attitude I doubt it.

If I were somebody researching Sammy-I would pay attention to all the details of the positive and negative reviews. Look at the big picture, and consider why so many people have voiced their honest opinions here. At least half of them are negative reviews. It shouldn’t matter whether they are anonymous or not. What should matter is what could have pissed them off so bad and what pushed them to the edge enough to make their opinions known to the public. I commend everybody who has voiced their opinions using their real images. Don’t be afraid guys, Sammy or the law can’t touch you if you’re giving you’re honest account. Good luck everybody

Keep chasing her tail and when you are ready to get chocked out and grow a pair, come on down. We will hook you up with a newbe white belt that will submit you in less than a minute.

Posting under anonymous does make a difference because people can make up whatever they want and not be called out on it. Thats exactly whats happening on this site. Everyone is exaggerating and to be honest it seems like primarily all the people who are involved with priscilla, the person who started the drama in the first place. Regardless of how many negative comments there are, this is hardly an accurate overall rating for the gym considering all of you guys associate together. Sammy just had knee surgery so obviously he isnt rolling as smoothly as he used to. He isnt even supposed to be on the mat until next year and hes still getting out there. Also, how long ago did some of you females try out the gym? I train six days a week and have never heard of you. We dont get many girls. Please people, youre still talking shit up on the internet. Your comments dont matter. No one with half a brain would make a decision about training here based on these comments.

Drama, Drama, Drama. This is horrible. Who would want to train at a place where the students go on a forum and talk crap about eachother and say mean things to someone for voicing their opinion? Angelo, you seem to be the worst. Really stupid. Is that supposed to attract people to come train at your academy? The jiu-jitsu place I train at has no drama at all. Everyone is friends and the instructors are great. I know Rodrigo and this is really sad. Tiexeira used to be an awesome place (small mat but awesome) because of how good the higher belts were. I have seen them at competitions and have heard from friends who have trained there a few times how great the school was, but that was over a year ago. I don’t believe Rodrigo is the one who posted above and I believe Sammy put a lot of people up to posting considering all the posts are after the first negative one. Even we have heard about Tiexiera BJJ and Sammy at our school which is about 15 miles away.

Sammy Is a foolish joke. His game sucks as well as his personality. I visited his school from a different school. Thank god I don’t train with a clown like him. Haha and apparently everyone else seems to agree too. Lol yeah if you’re reading this and in the market for a jiu jitsu school. Avoid Sammy. He is a sore loser. Has ego problems and personality problems. He belongs in the looney bin not in a position to teach.

no words can fully do justice of how bad an instructor and just an all around human being sammy garcia is. this is mainly because regardless of how many horrible decisions and just lack of human decency you experience while spending time with him, he has the uncanny ability to get exponentially worse as time goes on. the dude acts like he’s some sort of cartel boss who’ll cut you off if you show even the slightest sign of disobedience. he knows nothing about bjj and what the people and the art stand for. do yourself a favor and pretend like this school is the drunk ugly girl at the party and poke fun at it while keeping your distance.

Warning!!! Stay away from this guy!! He ruined his own reputation and its really getting out there to schools all over southern California. Don’t feel sorry for a pathetic excuse of a jiu jitsu coach like Sammy. The only people who support him is his own family (of course) and few select individuals. His school has diminished in numbers. Ask yourself this…if you see most people leave a school..why would they just do that? No one just decided to pick on Sammy he brought all his problems on himself. He treats his students like they are enlistees in the army and he is a general. Do yourselves a favor…avoid this thug, he is more of mafia head then a jiu jitsu coach.

Wow, i come on here to review the comments of the intructors I have trained under and to see this comments is uncalled for. I have trained under both Rodrigo and Sammy and here is the breakdown in my opinion. Sammy takes over a gym of Rodrigo who everyone loves because he is a good person and his jiu jitsu is world class, a no win situation. part of the reason he is also loved by some people that to be honest are selfish jerks that did not pay their dues or paid half and just took advantage of the man because he would say “don’t worry about it”. the clowns that did this are pathetic because this is how he made his living but you don’t care as long as You got good jiu jitsu for dirt cheap or for nothing at all. Do you think he would of left if he was making the amount of money he needed to to live comfortably? He also let the guys stay late after class talking crap and rolling with no consideration for Rodrigo. Now Sammy makes everyone pay their dues, is that wrong? This is how he makes his living so the guys that want a freebie need to either stop training because they can’t afford it or get a better job to pay your monthly dues or train some where else Also Sammy is all business and don’t let crap go on like it use to in the past. Bottom line if you don’t like the gym just go some where else and quit crying like a baby. Rodrigo is a better jiu jitsu artist than Sammy but I will tell you what professor Sammy puts it on everyone that he rolls against. The only ones that put up a struggle are the guys that think that is their mma time and get all hyped and go 110% to try to tap Sammy and they also usually weigh more than 210 pounds when he weighs 170 pounds but none of their jiu jitsu comes close to Rodrigo’s or Sammy’s game. Bottom line is Rodrigo’s jiu jitsu is better but Sammy’s not allowing punks to run the gym is great. I go for jiu jitsu, I don’t think I’m a monster mma guy but too many of these guys do. If you want great fundamentals and a strong coach that teaches discipline go to this gym.

This is so fucked up. The students here under Sammy are mindless drones. Great job Angelo on placing all your credentials on a forum for your sensei. And Gaby! Wow! So Sammy has conditioned you to believe he is equipped enough and sensible enough to be called your doctor. This ideology you guys have this dude is unbelievable! You guys hold this fucker up a pedestal, how is this possible with how poorly this school is run? And Miranda? You’re a fucking white belt who sits with Rachel at the corners of the gym talking shit about everybody and giving everybody dirty looks. You don’t know shit about this gym or its roots. How fucking dare you even think you have enough knowledge to talk shit about anybody here. Sammy has literally threatened and pushed people out because he just could. Jeff was a beast and Sammy let him go because Jeff could tap him out with his pinky. Tom was the best black belt I saw in this school! And Sammy kicked him out for correcting my partner. Dani was such a sweet girl who happened to be one of the very few people who wouldn’t talk shit when all of us would. Me and Matt getting kicked off the team page for training at other locations? Or Matt Parks dealing with Sammy’s bullshit? Sammy is fucking fraud. Everybody worth rolling with is gone. And if this shit keeps coming up on this forum, and if Sammy keeps bribing his students to continue to talk shit about the people who had enough heart to leave their home gym, none of us are coming back. What embarrassment all of you have been. Job well fucking done. Fuck Sammy. Fuck Rachel. Fuck Miranda. Fuck you Gino! And the all the rest of you who have chosen to ruin the life of this school. Nothing but hypocrites. Leaving this hell hole was the best decision I have made all year.

This sounds like an episode of Jerry Springer! All I know is that this used to be such an incredible team when Rodrigo was in charge. You guys won championships and many people from other schools wanted to come train there when they could. It’s really sad to see what has happened. For a whole competition team to leave speaks volumes. And you are right, lots of SoCal schools know all about your drama. I would be so embarrassed if I were you. You can have a very friendly place where people train and help eachother. These people are your “family” or at least they should be. I don’t know why an instructor (Sammy) would be against one of his students helping another. And who cares who taps who? It’s great when student’s help one another. It’s actually a selling point when someone is looking for a school to attend. If you guys have this much drama at your school with everyone talking to each other like this,or talking about the fact that there is girls sitting on the edge of the mat talking crap about everyone, I would look for a new place too if I were there. And those of you who are trying to help Sammy out by posting how great he is by calling everyone names who doesn’t agree with you, you are totally going about it the wrong way and doing more damage than good. This is just an outsider’s opinion, but I think it is a good one. Take it from someone who has been around for a long time and chill with all this crap. If it keeps up with all the drama and Sammy doesn’t change his ways, you won’t have a school to train at anyways.

I don’t know why I’m actually taking the time to do this but I just wanted to let you guys know, surrounding gyms like mine and Checkmat are viewing these comments you’re making about your teammates and instructors. What makes you guys think it’s ok to talk so negatively about one another? Why wouldn’t you guys bring all these concerns to Sammy or Rodrigo to begin with? I know a few of you personally, as I have rolled with you at Rodrigos and few of you at my gym (which I will not mention). Badmouthing the women from your gyms isn’t ok either guys. All the women at every gym who have a down to earth personality at all gets labeled a slut. The main instructors daughter is usually called a bitch too. I expected more from you guys, you were once a well respected academy. Gino, I mean you’re a world champ dude, why would you speak so poorly about a 22 year old young woman? What makes you any better? Don’t play the innocent guy and pretend you never betrayed your wife. A few of us know about this. Brown belt, you’re an example now, there are white belts looking up to you. There is so much hatred coming from this school and I can say is if I ever had the pleasure of having one of you step into our academy ever, I’ll be the first one to ask you to leave. This is a disgrace. A word of advice: stop attacking the wrong people for your hatred and focus more on your jiu jitsu. You guys are making a bad name for yourself here.

From naked pictures to love life to claiming People burn down orphanages To wishing death on someones family this is disgusting. Sean is right this makes anyone and everyone who trained or trains here look like complete scum. Funny part is all these comments its 3 or 4 burn outs who weren’t happy with services they paid for and left or have a lot of displaced anger for Rodrigo for leaving and if you don’t realize this does as much damage to his reputation more than anyone. You guys left voluntarily or otherwise everyone had there reasons myself included. I don’t know why I’m loosing my time on this but… For the last time… It makes me very sad to see that people use their time in such a negative way. If any of these comments come from people that trained with me, they never paid attention to any classes and they don’t know me… People that really train jiu jitsu should use their free time to train and exercise positiveness to themselves and to others. Very feel students have been with me since I started my gym in 2003. People leave for different reasons. As much as we try we cannot make everyone happy all the time and that’s part of life… Free yourselves from negativeness!! You have no idea how bad that is for you! Much love to everyone, wish you all the best in life… Bring the focus back to your life and train hard!! You’ll gain much more.

Please, please, please if you’re defending the gym, Sammy and Rachel, refrain from being too spiteful. Arguing with these guys is like arguing over who has the prettiest crayon. Its not worth it, and a lot of damage has been done. I love the shit out of this little hole in the wall gym, Sammy and Rachel are fucking fantastic, and I’m glad I met them. I understand some of you don’t see it like I do, that’s okay, you don’t have to like them. Nobody is telling you to like them, but the fact that you’re all posting these terrible things makes you all look like loose assholes. I guess this goes for everyone thats gotten caught up in this. Myself included. To “truth about Sammy” Get therapy, you seriously have some issues, I’m not joking, I fear for anyone that might get in a relationship with you. You sound like you would murder your own children. I don’t know what savage village you crawled out of but I’m glad you left the gym. Whomever you may happen to be.. To the swine talking about “tapping” Dani, what the fuck is wrong with you? I hope to God you never have daughters, or a girlfriend for that matter. Do you really think that’s an appropriate way to support a friend? You clearly don’t have respect for women. Everyone else, I know you dislike Dani, but please treat her with dignity, she’s a human being. I know a lot of shit was stirred up but please don’t slut shame or body shame another woman. How would you feel if someone were talking to your daughter in this manner? Sammy is one dedicated badass, he trains with a screwed up knee, instead of taking it easy like he should, he goes out on the mat and trains. He was reasonable when I first came into the gym, there was no “favoritism”. He’s a black belt that knows his stuff and is so dedicated to the gym I don’t think he’s ever closed it even if he were sick. He teaches technique and is adamant about how important technique is. Hell when I roll with him I’m never safe, and I know that thats how it is to roll with a true black belt. Rachel is an amazing purple belt and friend. She is a great instructor in the children classes, she teaches the basics, the fundamentals, and I’m damn impressed when I watch those kids roll. I’ve seen some of these kids start from the beginning, and I’ve seen their progression, to say she cant teach or is a “joke” is just childish. When I watch everyone training at the gym (sometimes at the corner of the mat. see what I did there?), I can see their improvement, I can see that they all care about training. I see the innocence of a white belt, the learned experience of the blue belts, dedication and love of the sport in the Purple belts, the determination in the brown belts, and I see the love and the true beauty of Jiu jitsu in the black belt. This is what our gym is about. This is what every gym is about. If you train, leave your ego, hatred, and whatever other bullshit you’ve got chained to you at home and just let yourself be immersed in this art. Its fun, serious, painful, dangerous, its everything, and its so damn beautiful. Bottom line, everyone, stop being pricks. Oh and Josie, I’ll be honest with you. I like your advice but at the same time you’re being a pretentious ass about it too. So am I, so I guess I can’t say much.. huh. Just know, Josie, you’re a part of this “drama” just as much as the rest of us, now that you’ve posted on here. One of us, Josie.

Why do you keep coming back here to talk shit to people and about a woman who doesn’t even train with you guys anymore? You talked shit about me too when I had relationship issues at the gym. It was you who fueled that fire and thats why I left. I’m only coming to Dani’s offense because she’s a awesome girl who was hated on since the first day she walked in to Rodrigos. I know because I was there. I don’t even talk to her anymore but I know none of this true, and I know how much you guys hate her because of Sammy and Rachel. The same way all of you turned on Jeff when he got kicked out. There’s no brotherhood here at all and I thank Sammy for kicking me out when he did. Get a life Gino. Grow the fuck up.

For the record Jonathan Carter is a blue belt who doesn’t own a gym. Hey John I am glad you decided to be genuine and put your name on at least one of your MANY hateful posts here. Good job owning it and much Love man! You can say anything you want about me man but the people who know me know what I am about, and I never once said or portrayed myself to be all sunshine and rainbows, but there is a reason why I have friends. I can rant and go on and on and insult you and be as disrespectful as you have been personally to me but I won’t since I know you and what you are about and I understand where all your anger and impulsive behavior comes from to write such hateful posts. I’m taking the high road on this one. I have done nothing to you but be a good friend to you and training partner. You even stepped foot into my house to borrow a Halloween costume from me dude. I sat and talked to you for many hours on more occasions than I can remember about your MANY problems and issues going on in your life and your struggles of being a young adult. Never once did I berate you or insult you when you needed to “TALK” and no matter what I always made time even when others did not. Not just me but countless other training partners who trained with you before you decided to voluntarily leave the gym a few weeks BEFORE Rodrigo left last year. Oh, and those gyms you’ve mentioned? I guess you do not keep up on current events in my bjj training. Since you are so interested, I left Teixeira Garcia a month ago amicably with respect and my integrity intact from both my coaches. I have been training at both the places you mentioned pretty frequently since then to get ready for Worlds on 10/5 and No Gi Worlds in November along with a few other places. I have trained at La Habra since I was a white Belt on and off to get ready for competitions to roll with different partners and have always been welcomed there. If I see you in person, no hard feelings since like I said I understand, but a word of friendly advice since I do care about your well being and growth believe it or not, the insults and disrespect you have displayed here could probably get you left in a hole in pieces by a lesser person than me that doesn’t understand the “why” or “who” you are behind your comments. Not a threat in any way, just a reality check that there are people in this world who have less value for human life than me and wouldn’t think twice about causing you physical or emotional trauma for insulting them the way you insulted me. Unfortunately I have rubbed elbows with more than my share. Like I always told you, think about things before you do or say them, people aren’t as understanding as me. Nothing but good vibes and good luck to you John. Also, I NEVER posted ANY comments about anyone here anonymously or was ever disrespectful to any female I have EVER trained with, I Always used my name and owned my words. John if you can’t notice the Fur flying, this whole thread has “Cat Fight” written all over it mostly except for your Pseudo-anonymous posts. It’s a disagreement among girls from what I can tell for the most part. Your smarter and better than that. Good training brutha.

For the record Gino, I haven’t posted any anonymous comments here either. I am sorry the damage caused by Sammy over the past year. I left because I didn’t pay for coach Sammy, I paid my tuition to Rodrigo for Rodrigos instruction. I even told Rodrigo I intended to return when he returns. I am sorry to say this but by the looks of things I will never return. I know you are full of anger and I hope you can resolve your issues. When I first got to know you I did like you, we talked about many issues and discussed lots of things. but look at how many terrible things you’ve said to black belts and many more, the list goes on Gino. How many people can you insult and “call out” before it becomes clear that you are causing many problems. Its hard to train with someone as angry and bitter as yourself. I am not angry or hateful to you Gino, i wish the best for you and nothing less.but many others share my opinions Gino. Its nothing personal but its difficult to have a person so angry and hostile to everyone around. And you are right I am not the owner of any of these gyms but the owners will hear of this.

Hi my name is Samantha Garcia and I am Sammy Garcia’s oldest daughter 23 years old.For everyone who thinks he is such a great father and man don’t even know the truth. As for why class was cancelled Monday August 26, I will tell you your instructor was in jail since early Sunday morning. For striking me across the head for trying to protect my mother (wife of 23 years)who he assaulted. Because I called him a man whore for cheating on his wife, who by the way would take the whore to the gym to do his nasty business or to cheap motels. But yet want’s everyone to have respect for him as if he is a KING. That to me is a joke of a man. Wednesday he went to court and was charged with DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Now is that the kind of man you want teaching children. Because I know if I had kids I wouldn’t want them any where near this man who hits and beats women. As a result he is on probation for 3 years and has a restraining order for 3 years not to come with 100 yards of myself or my mother. He has to complete abuse classes. Seeing he would hit his own daughter makes me think he wouldn’t think twice of hitting a student. If anyone would like proof I not only have the physical proof of the bruises but also the police report and restraining order and would be more then willing to show anyone who needs proof. NOW THAT IS THE TRUTH ABOUT SAMMY GARCIA!

I am extremely saddened by what I have witnessed here. To Samantha, I am very sorry for your recent family experience. This truly saddens my heart. Rodrigo is my little brother and I cannot standby and watch all this unfold. I will be in contact with Rodrigo soon and determine a plan of action to try to mitigate this issue. PLEASE let my post be the last.

To Samantha Garcia Because you want to publicize our families business, how about we tell the whole story for everyone on here who has nothing better to do? My father has been the greatest father I could ask for. He has always worked multiple jobs to provide the greatest life he could for his wife and children, even when you were ungrateful and undeserving. Yes it is true that he was put in jail by you and your mother, but there’s a reason why he’s no longer in there. If what you said was true theres no way he would be out and working. You must of forgot the not once or twice but six times she stole from him, with the latest time being just this weekend when she illegally withdrew from his account. Your mother has never had to work a day in her life because my father has always provided for her, yet she has the audacity to steal from him and our business. Not once has he charged you rent or made you pay a bill in your life but instead he has helped you. Lets also let everyone know about how you and your mother broke into our gym and stole the pink slips to our vehicles so that you could fraudulently sign them over to yourselves and get caught. Although, I must say I don’t understand why someone who has a license that has been invalid for 9 years and a warrant out for their arrest needs yet another vehicle? You have no right to comment on our business because neither you or your ungrateful mother know what it’s like to run one. You also don’t know how great of a coach he is, because while he is working both of you are wasting his hard earned money. You have placed a restraining order against him because you say you fear for your safety yet you continue to contact and follow him, that doesn’t sound like someone who fears for their safety to me. You say you have bruises yet the police officers said otherwise. If the goal of you and everyone else who has wrote a negative comment on here is to see our gym close, good luck because there’s a reason were still in business. You call your own father a joke what do you think you are? You come on here playing victim looking for sympathy and pity from people you don’t even know. If your going to point fingers maybe you should see if your hands are clean first. How this gym is ran is nobodies business but my fathers and Rodrigo’s, if you don’t like it open your own gym. If you have left the gym why are you looking back? Move on with your life and find something better to do. And to everyone else on here writing anonymously grow a pair and put your name.

I don’t need to know the details to know that what you did was beyond unnecessary and fucked up. They don’t deserve to have something like you in their life. I know you wont care what I say, I know you don’t give two fucks about who I am, all I can say is I hope you take a long, hard look at yourself, you’re an atrocious abomination.

Samantha Garcia: because I respect Sammy (YOUR FATHER) very much, I will keep this clean and not tell you what I truly think of what you have done. Since all of Rodrigo’s parasites are “Blood-Thirsty” and live & thrive off of people’s “PAIN”.. let me tell you a real story!!! My 28 yr old sister was coming driving home drunk every weekend (a couple years ago), to the point where she would have to crawl into the house… after several warnings and failed interventions by her family, my dad decided that enough was enough and lost his cool! My dad beat the “shit” out of my sister (literally) black eye and all!! It was a rude awakening for her, BUT HER ASS STOPPED DRUNK DRIVING REAL QUICK! Long story short. He’s your FATHER!!! you’re lucky your dad only “slapped” you for being so freaking disrespectful. Let me remind you again……he’s “YOUR FATHER”. I know better than to EVERRRR DISREPECT MY PARENTS!

Gaby I know you are upset, but please refrain from statements like this!….I have been nothing but respectful to all students (rodrigo’s or Sammy’s) This is just getting out of hand and I really learned from Rodrigo to respect everyone. I do not want to get involved in all of this…But let’s start thinking before we post…This is just hurting the school as a whole (Rodrigo’s students and Sammy’s students). I ask all of you to refrain from beating on each other, “Let it go”….If some dont like training with Sammy then dont, post your expierence but not your feelings (big difference). As a black belt under Rodrigo, I wish you all the greatest and please let’s stop making this a personal attack against groups of people! I appreciate truthful expierences….NOT ATTACKS! Rodrigo is such a humble, great person and everyone is tainting his name and he is not here to defend it. Please stop!!!

I am deeply saddened, hurt, disappointed of all this. My heart bleeds for Sammy, Rodrigo and all the people directly and indirectly effected by this. In that regard, I want to share my thoughts and feelings about what just happened recently. We are all imperfect and we all have our skeletons in the closet. Thanks Samantha for airing your family’s dirty laundry here were the whole bjj community can reflect and comment. Way to go, kid! It shows class or just an immature individual who handle can’t dealing with negative things happening so she must push it away on others; hurt people hurt people. Second, Racheal & the girls: “thou shall not throw pearls at swine” don’t waste your breath or for that matter your fingers. Keep training, so you can show the negative nellys what it’s like to train with Sammy, on the mat. To vets, negative nellys, everyone reading this post: where’s the love for the gentle art? Where’s the love for each other? Whre’s the love for Rodrigo? Everyone has managed to make a such a big fuss about something posted that will go away on it’s own! Thank guys! You have indirectly caused chaos and undue attention to situation that calls for NO attention! Thank you everyone, you’ve all accomplished one thing: that is create a wedge and separation between what Sammy and Rodrigo hoped to accomplish. Way to go! As for training here, I trained here after Rodrigo left. HOWEVER, my husband has trained under Rodrigo for many years– oh that makes him a “vet” or a “parasite” I can’t stand this stupid separation and fragments of what’s left of this issue. I remember babysitting a two toddlers in the Walnut gym, while their dads roll. I remember Cecil as a blue belt training my son back in Walnut. I remember Nikki as a white belt. I remember picking up my kid at the lounge, while she watched tv in the lounge where the lockers are now. I remember being welcomed in open arms, even after I’ve rejected Rodrigo’s invitation to train time and time again. I remember seeing my husband’s big grin after he rolls with his “brothers”. Everyone! I mean everyone has managed to chip away at the pieces of the heart of this gym. You all want to blame Sammy– [bleep]! You contributed too! Where is the sense of community! Not because of Sammy but because you left voluntary or involuntarily. Sammy could have dealt with it differently, but cut the man some slack. Have you ever been handed a key of a established gym and try to put the pieces together? Maybe but you’re not Sammy and you don’t know what he was dealing with at the time–. Don’t just blame all the things that happened at the gym all Sammy’s fault. It’s not– we all contributed one way or another. What sucks is you all say “brutha” “bro” “brother” SHOW IT! Community is trying to work with one another through our differences and chaos — How do rocks get polished? By friction. Too bad for all you, “brothers” you left. Like family my butt, family stick together. Communities stick together…An imperfect community with imperfect people… but one wants to be the big guy and be humble… You want to always be heard.. Well, a big part of humility is LISTENING…Have some humility — ALL OF YOU– FORGET YOUR EGOS, FORGET WHO SAID WHAT— SHUT THE UP AND TRAIN! Those of us that spent years training in Covina are truly saddened by the turn of events. Weather we train there or not, we still care about the gym and Rodrigo’s name which seems to be irreparably tarnished along with Sammy’s. Out of all the classless comments on here, the worst and most damaging have come from Sammy’s family against him. We do not know the whole situation nor should anyone jump to conclusions, and neither does 90% of the people, but public perception is everything in any school. From what it looks like it’s a huge black eye to Rodrigo and a presumed death sentence to the school. It’s just terrible for all parties involved and believe it or not, the people who actually value what they were taught by Rodrigo and I am sure I speak for all of us are really hoping this is not the case and the future for the school. I just do not see how a parent could look past this or people who train there not be concerned with being a supporter of domestic violence regardless of circumstances. From the outside looking in, that’s exactly what it looks like and exactly how most people will perceive it to be.

I’m sad ill be missing the upcoming promotions, it is such a lively and just completely amazing experience, but ill be sure to be there for the next one. I’m always trying to absorb as much techniques as possible even just by watching my fellow students roll with each other. We’ve even got a wrestling class going on as well, which is phenomenal. I’m excited for the upcoming seminars!

Living in La Puente area and trying to find a gym that is quality and not to far a distance. I visited the school and was welcomed by Sammy. He seemed nice enough. I’m in my 40’s and am looking learn bjj, now that I have time…plus would help me get/stay in shape. Two things stood out. Rodrigo T. wasn’t present (quite frankly, that was the main reason I walked in)and didn’t seem like he would be a day in and day out person. The other is, all he talked about was competition and his team. Not something I was interested at the time. I was dressed in work out clothes, but he didn’t ask me to visit the mat. I kind felt like a wallflower during the high school dance, lol… Well, I didn’t go back.

To: Looking for a local gym in La Puente Area Hi, Sammy has taken over the gym for Rodrigo while he trains BJJ around the world. He is a black belt under Rodrigo and has had his own gym prior to this opportunity. I don’t know when you visited, but one of the biggest tournaments of the year for us was just a few weeks ago (mid March); probably why he was talking about competition so much. When he says “team” he is referring to every student in his gym. While there are many competitors, there are still a great many students who simply train for fun and for a good workout. Usually everyone is greeted upon their arrival and given a schedule to see what day would be good for them to give the class a try (for free!) even if its that same day. If it was toward the end of class you weren’t likely to be asked to try that day. If you have visited in the last 3 weeks you actually haven’t yet seen Sammy as he was training in Brazil with Rodrigo. There are many great people at this gym and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Sorry if your first impression wasn’t the best. I hope you will give it another chance! Best of luck in finding the best gym for your needs!

Wow, where to begin? As a white-belt I have had the honor of rolling with all parties above, from Rodrigo down to my very own son. It is a true heart-ache to see such animosity and negativity amongst brothers. We all dont have to be bestfriends, but we dont have to be enemies either. As LADIES & GENTLEMEN we owe it to ourselves, as well as to our families, to always see the good out of every situation we are exposed to; this too includes “OUR” chosen art. Please keep in mind that Rodrigo’s decision to place Sammy Garcia as his right hand man is solely between Rodrigo & Sammy, that’s it. Respect it. IF ANYONE HAS ANY LOVE FOR THE ART, FOR RODRIGO, OR FOR THE INTEGRITY OF OUR ACADEMY AND YOURSELF, stop disrespecting a place people call home, as YOU ONCE DID TOO. Take this up with Rodrigo so you can hear it directly from the horses mouth, as I did. Unfortunately, we cannot get along everyone, such is life. As a whitebelt,my game needs improvement; alot of improvement. So I’m in no position to correct someones technique, criticize a higher belts method, and especially challenge a professors lesson. As a student, it just not my place. I am honored to have the chance to learn. Sammy has never mistreated me, or my son, and has always carried himself as ANY man should be expected to, with up front honesty and integrity. Many of you have always treated those around in the same manner and we are all better people because of it. I keep reading how many people are stating that a large portion of Rodrigos student left after Sammy took over, well that’s a partial truth. If we are to be considered men in our own minds then we must first accept the responsibility of doing and saying whats right, even when people aren’t looking or know the ENTIRE truth. You see folks, while it is true that some people did leave because of the change, more than half of the people left NOT because Sammy took over but because Rodrigo left. Once Rodrigo left a couple of people (1 or 2 to be exact) showed their true colors, non of which had tattoos, causing many to leave for the fact that they didn’t want to deal with unbecoming egos. NOT BECAUSE OF SAMMY BUT RATHER THE ALPHA-MALE MENTALITY OF A CHAMP ACTING LIKE A CHUMP. LET US BE MEN ABOUT THIS AND TELL IT LIKE IT REALLY IS. I myself was contemplating leaving but came to the realization that while good men which I truly love and miss (Eric B/ Rusty S/ Both Jose’s/ Jonathan C/ Chuck Ho, and others) have gone, so have the ones which started and perpetuated this whole fiasco, the only silver lining in this grey cloud. Believe it or not, this change is a goodthing. In a perfect world we would all get along, but nobody is perfect. We all have our own opinions and should be responsible with them and how we impose them. We all have our faults; I’m fat, hairy, and poor. Sammy is doing a great job with the place, I WOULD NOT TAKE MY SON THERE TO TRAIN IF HE WASN’T. I LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING BACK ON TRACK AND TRAINING LIKE BEFORE. I LOOK FORWARD TO FOLLOWING THE GUIDANCE OF MY PROFESSORS (Rodrigo & Sammy) AND TO ONCE AGAIN SEE AND DEVELOPE MY GAME BY TRAINING SOME GREAT GUYS AS WELL (MENTIONED ABOVE) which highly recommended and advised by Rodrigo all the time. Furthermore, a mans personal business is a mans personal business. No love loss here, I’ve fucked up too and I feel your pain, Sammy. I love most of you. To those that i don’t love, we dont have to be enemies or be uncivilized with each other. It would best that as men we will be respectful of each others opinions and agree to disagree. If you REALLY want to know what its like at our academy, don’t form an opinion based on our passion for this place, go and see it yourself. You’ll find that there will be bad seeds everywhere and anywhere you train, thats just a fact of life!

This is the same guy who talked crap about Sammy Garcia to anyone willing to listen, bitching about rules and how much of an a..hole he was and his instruction was crap compared to Rodrigo and even Gracie Barra. Same guy who left soon after Rodrigo did saying the same things as above, more like Robert had to finally pay for bjj and skipped out when he couldnt take advantage of Rodrigo anymore and then still talked all kinds of crap about Sammy Garcia when he left. Now he is drinking the Kool Aide?? Because it’s convenient for you, NOW? I’m a young guy still in my 20’s but people like this disgust me, have some back bone and stand behind your words instead of coming on here to kiss ass and pretend like it’s all good now after you laid your turds before leaving the last time. This is the exact reason why I make sure I don’t smoke too much weed only on weekends and after rolling….you start sounding like this guy. Spineless, delusional stab in the back.

Kind of late to this game, but since people might stumble upon this page, I’d like to share my thoughts. Never trained with Rodrigo. Started training BJJ at HGBJJ with Julio Lang and Sean Fernandez, great guys. I trained there because I lived in Rowland Heights before moving to Covina. My two oldest Kids ( 9 and 8 at the time) started training with Sammy in June 2013. Covina was a closer location than Rowland Heights for my mother-in-law to take them to class. I was training at HGBJJ while my kids trained at TGBJJ. Sammy was well aware of this. Never, ever made an issue of it. Never pressured me to change. Eventually, I did change. Covina was easier to get to, my kids trained there, and I got a speeding ticket on my way to HG one day trying to make it to class on time. I will be the first to admit that I was not the most consistent of students. I was there a solid 6 months 2 to 3 times per week. I then decided to dedicate myself more to my Krav Maga training, which is what I had been doing for a while before adding BJJ. My kids however, continued to train and compete. For all the people out there, the parents that may be considering training here, please make up your own mind. Every person here has there own takeaway. Every story has two sides to the coin. What works for one, does not work for the other. My personal experience is that this academy has been one of the best martial art experiences in my lifetime. I know each time that I have been there that the people that are there are excited and happy to be there. I know my kids are safe there. Rachel has been nothing but helpful and accommodating. She works great with the kids. Sammy has been pleasant, supportive and professional. Whatever his personal problems may be, 16 years as a lawyer have taught me that every situation has more going on than anyone will ever know. But more than that, who am I to cast a stone? This team is successful because they have committed themselves to the mentality that they are the best…and that requires commitment not only to the academy but to themselves. Sammy pushes his team because he genuinely cares about their success. Are personalities going to crash? Certainly. When you have a group of competitors that’s going to happen. I never had an interest to compete. I made that clear to Sammy. It’s not my personality. He never gave me a hard time over that. Ultimately, I concede that I don’t know the history of the transition between Rodrigo and Sammy. But, I’m no armchair quarterback either. It is what it is. From my experience, this is a top place to train. Like reasonable people, I hope anyone that is reading this thread makes the choice for themselves and actually visits and trains at the academy before discounting it based on a thread. I have no bone in this game. If I never saw Sammy or Rachel again in my life it wouldn’t make a difference. But I am glad that I do see them. I’m glad my kids will continue to train there, They are good people, doing a tough job, in the best possible way they can. I personally would recommend this academy, and continue to do so.
