Scott Shields is a fraud. He was never awarded a black belt by any instructor anyplace. He has falsly claimed for many years that a mna named Marcus Renato gave him his belt. Marcus Renato does not exist. Further information can be found at

#1- This picture is not Scott Shields #2- Scott Shields is a fraudulent black belt #3- At best he admitted to paying for his bb as a purple belt and has invoked the name of a recently deceased black belt as being involved #4- at worse he didn’t even pay for his belt, he just slapped it on his waist. #5- #6- this listing should be removed or at least edited to show his rank as purple, the last legitimate rank he held.

Scott Shields is the real deal. Man, I train with him at Jacare’s academy many years ago. He is no fraud. He got black belt the right way, by rolling and shwoing his skills. he smoke a purple with his hands tied! you guys are funny!

Scott Shields is an amazing instructor! He is detail oriented and extremely knowledgeable. I don’t know what you guys think you know but he definately did not “buy” a belt. He has been training jj for over 20 years. His level of skill and dedication is shown in his techniques and constant pursuit of excellence. He is an example to all true martial artists and I am honored to train with him. I reccommend him to anyone wanting to learn jj and get good.

If you’re looking to improve your; conditioning, self control, physical well being, self esteem or simply your perspective – YOU must go to Scott Shields Martial Arts. As a father of 3 20 year old’s and a +50 year old myself, I attend training for the conditioning and to learn self defense. But you learn so much more… Character, self awareness, fellowship, discipline and respect are all taught and developed at his class. My college son turned me onto Scott Shields MA Classes this past summer and I continued to attend when he went back to college… It’s one of the best gifts you can give to your child and yourself! I have been training at Scott Shields Martial Arts Academy for over 8 years. This is my third martial arts school that I have attended, and it is far superior to my previous ones in terms of self defense knowledge. His vast knowledge is nothing short of amazing. I drive an hour round trip each time I attend. I have personally seen Mr. Shields’ legitimate ranks in person, and there are many photos of him with his instructors such as Dan Inosanto. The people who attend his school are some of the best I’ve ever met, and there is a huge amount of respect among all of us. Mr. Shields is currently dealing with immature individuals who are trying to smear his name. To that I say visit the school in person, look at Mr. Shields’ credentials, watch a few classes, ask questions of the students themselves, and you’ll have all the proof you need that these internet guys are simply full of lies.

I have been training under the instruction of Scott Shields for the last year and a half. I wish that I would have begun much earlier in my life. Mr. Shields is a great instructor!!! He has extreme knowledge of martial arts, as well as human nature. He not only teaches you the key moves, but goes way beyond by explaining it in a practical real life manner. He has a great way of communicationg with the students and is a genuinely caring person. I can’t say enough good things about Mr. Shields. The enviroment at the school is wonderful and is a direct reflection of the man that bears the same name. I would receommend this school to anyone that wants to improve their physical fitness, self confidence, self defense and have a great time.

I have been to a few of Scott Shields’s seminars. He seems to really know his stuff! He has an amazing amount of skill and can teach them with ease! If YOU think he is a fake, go to his school and see for yourself! All I can say is you will regret it! Best just stay home or go train at your gym.

A dedicated instructor! Street smart and no-nonsense in his approach. When I had the opportunity to work with Scott Shields, I knew he was only intersted in making sure all of his students reached their potential. He was one of the most selfless and accesible intructors I’ve met. I recommend his scholl to anyone looking to train BJJ, whether they be profesionals or neophytes.

If you look at all the “testimonials” above you can clearly see that they are all posted by the same person… never before have I seen such obvious “shill” reviews. Scott Shields is as honest in his advertising and posting here as he is in life. SIMPLE, if you dont know what to believe, go to look at the facts, and then look at how to figure out what is true for yourself. Scott Shields is a liar and a fraud. Call him, and ask about his black belt in BJJ… then decide for yourself what the truth is… or better, call Marcus Renato (the man who supposedly gave scott his BB) and ask him. WHat Scott does not get is that this site is frequented no by moms of young kids doing research on a TKD school to send Johnny to… but hard core BJJ students. Scott and his bogus reviews are not fooling anyone. Scott is a fraud and a con man.
16. Submitted by Steven on Tuesday December 13, 2011 3:57 PM
Scott Shields is NOT a BJJ black belt. This has been proven beyond any doubt. He is a JKD guy. He is a fraud who bought/faked a BJJ BB to increase his marketability. The few legit BJJ BB’s in the NC area knows this as well.

Scott Shields is a fraud!! Stay away from this guy. He is a con man who has made up a story to award himself a Black Belt in BJJ to market his school. If you go to youtube and watch his students roll it will quickly be apparent that he doesn’t know what he is doing. The JKD mindset is that he can take everything useful from any martial art in three months that is why he claims somehting crazy like 17 black belts.

I’ve been training in mixed martial arts for 17 years and was training with Scott Shields, had to move away and trained where I could in CA and FL. I returned and went back to Scott Shields for content, character and truth in advertising. I left the last place because the owners claims of lineage didn’t match the product. The irony of the reviews that aren’t positive are clearly from people who didn’t train at the school and haven’t witnessed Scott’s reception when we travel to other schools and seminars. Not sure the origin of the negative energy – easy way to find out and stop in and try it.

1) I’m certainly NOT posting over and over under different names, as has been asserted. 2) If you doubt, the offer still stands, come down and roll. Bottom line, put up or shut up. Scott Shields has the goods to back up his claims; I haven’t seen ANY of these “keyboard commandos” down at the school to put their money where their mouths are. Words are extremely cheap, people. Come and decide, we stand behind everything we’ve said. Scott Shields is the real deal.

Scott shields was called out to do a grappling match and was also called out to do a MT fight on the forum. He has not responded to such. Ofcourse nobody is going to go to his school and challenge him. I think that would be pretty stupid since Scott has already threatened people with legal action.

I’m the owner of this site and I do not know Scott Shields. I do watch active threads and normally don’t get involved. If I can verify an accusation, however, I feel it’s my duty. I can verify that all of the positive feedback has been by unique IP address and in a very short time frame. Being a network engineer by trade, this would be a very difficult task for someone trying to fake these comments and I have never seen anyone with forethought to go to separate locations to forge positive comments. I can’t authenticate Scott’s rank, but the support on this page appears authentic to me. Again, I don’t know Scott and I’m not on either side, but since I did see the accusation that these posts were fabricated I felt it’s my responsibility to share this.
23. Submitted by Check my Rank on Tuesday December 13, 2011 6:11 PM
Bobby, I would urge you to check out You can also sheck out the three threads at , and yes that’s three threads that are a mile long. At the very least the man made up a person to give himself the rank of Black Belt. The only rank he has recieved and for which there is any proof is purple.

I just read those suggested links, and I have to say there are definitely a bunch of immature keyboard commandos hiding in their moms’ basements spouting off things they openly admit they can’t prove. I wouldn’t believe any of those guys, as that mmaguy even openly admits at one point in one of those threads that he was LYING about some supposed information… Nothing like an admitted liar telling you to trust him on something he can’t prove about some guy he never met. Hilarious! Obvious loser wanna be tough guy…

I was looking into training at Scott’s Academy, because I heard he was a BJJ blackbelt. But his website says he does not teach BJJ…but he is listed here as a BJJ blackbelt? Seems odd. Can someone verify if he is a BJJ blackbelt and under which instructor?
26. Submitted by Jared P on Tuesday December 13, 2011 8:01 PM
“Anonymous”, I find your comment interesting. You talk trash about mmaguy from the forum, yet mma guy’s real name is Phil Gizzi. Would you mind revealing your identity and not hiding behind someone else’s? And Rick, he has left the BJJ community because he’s offended that people have questioned his belt. Instead he’s fabricated “American Combat Jiu Jitsu” which you’ll find taught at his academy. Name me a single BJJ black belt who is willing to turn his back on the entire sport rather than verify his lineage? Doesn’t happen.

I think it’s poor form for one (or several) martial artists to spend time tearing down another. Is this the steps you have to take to get students? Where is the bushido code… loyalty, honor, respect? Doesn’t appear respectful to me.

I think it is poor form for a Martial Artist like Scott Shields to lie about his credentials. Where is the honor and respect in that? Respect is difficult to earn and easy to lose, and Scott Shields deserves little to none.

Scott Shields is in NO WAY a BJJ Black Belt. The highest legit bjj rank he ever got was purple. There has been a lengthy investigation of him and his BJJ claims and it was clearly shown that he lied about his BJJ BB. He is NOT a BJJ black belt. He is a BJJ fraud. BJJ is a great sport and a great martial art and let’s keep BJJ clean. Legit black belts work hard to earn the rank and they deserve recognition, not this faker.
32. Submitted by Tim Edwards on Wednesday December 14, 2011 11:46 AM
Bobby T. As I sincerely doubt your intention for this site was fraudulent self promotion, might I suggest that BJJ instructors claiming rank of black belt must submit a traceable lineage of their BB with their application (or at least two generations)? While Mr. Shields may be a great guy and even great instructor, it indeed seems that his claim of being a BJJ Black Belt is a lie. The BJJ community is unique in the protectiveness it has for its true black belts, and those holding that rank do so with pride, knowing that it can and should be traced all the way back to HG. Don’t allow the dilution of this to be furthered by your site.

Tim, I am not for or against anyone. The website is here for the purpose of sharing positive or negative about instructors and letting both sides defend themselves. I am a brown with 9 years in to get it. I trained every day sometime all day. Believe me when I say I know what goes into earning a brown belt, much less black. I am working on a piece for the website that will allow a professor to confirm rank. So if your professor cofirms you rank, the profile will have a confirmed by icon or badge to their professor’s profile.

Sifu Shields is in a class by himself. I have never met much such a nicer person in my entire life…not only that, The man clearly knows what he is talking about. He explains the arts in a way that anyone can understand them. He is very patient and YES he is the real deal! I have known Mr. Shields since January 2005. almost 7 yrs. and I have to say that his instruction is a breath of fresh air. he makes every class/private informative and very educational. you leave his lessons with MORE(Did I say more?) YES…MORE than what you came in with…Not only that, He is a great friend and mentor. It really upsets me to hear anyone verbally attack one of my friends. And yes, That is his real picture. whoever said that it wasn’t needs a reality check. I find a lot of these comments childish and rather sophomoric. To think that someone has created a website just to blast one person tells me a lot. it tells me that: A. You have WAAAAY too much time on your hands. B. your parents have failed you. C. You have no life. And…. D. You are jealous because you wish you could do half as good as Mr. Shields in a snow storm up hill at a funeral on Christmas day!

Yames. First off, when comments were made about the pic of Sifraud Shields, there was a diffrent pic up, not the current one that is in fact the fraud in quesiton. Next, I am sure he is a nice guy, I would even venture to say that he is a good teacher of stick fighting, kung fu, and whatever other BS martial arts he paid for belts and certificates for. What your silly and ignorant post FAILS to address is the SIMPLE fact that he claims to of been promoted to the rank of Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu by a person who DOES NOT EXIST. What is more amazing to you? the fact That a person who LOVES a sport so much that they took the time to create a website that exposes a person who is ripping people off with his lies and BS, or that a person like Scott has made a living for 20 years based on lies and fabricated ranks. Find Marcus Renato, thats ALL that has to happen to make this all go away.

I am commenting because I actually know Scott Shields. Since each of the negative comments come from someone who hasn’t met, trained, or rolled with him this seems important on a “Rate My Instructor” website. Perhaps on another website like “Rate An Instructor You’ve Never Met” others would be better served. I have been training under Scott Shields for almost three years in multiple arts and he is the ideal martial artist and teacher. He constantly demonstrates depth of knowledge and real world application and openly shares with students. But don’t believe me, go see for yourself, and judge from your actual experience.

The fact that he’s a good instructor or not is irrelevant in martial arts where honor and integrity are cornerstones of the sport. The FACT is that Shields has lied about his lineage and rank. If you’re going to spend money and time training and you don’t care if it’s done by a fraud, go ahead and choose Shields. If things like morals, integrity and honesty mean anything to you, go train with someone who put the time, blood and sweat in to earning a black belt from another legitimate black belt who actually exists on the planet earth!

I cant believe he is still doing this to people. I lived in Charlotte a few years back and went to Scott’s school for a month. He charged me for a year and would not let me out of contract also charged me ten dollars more a month he said it was taxes. As far as knowledge in bjj I was only there a month and he had other students teaching a lot of classes. Neither Scott or his students seemed to really have a knowledge of what they were teaching they just picked random techniques. To me he seemed like he was trying to kill time with exercises and stretching. Every class was filled with 40 minutes of non sense like 5 minutes of instruction and ten minutes of drilling.

All anyone has ever asked him for was to provide the contact information for “Marcus Renato” who supposedly gave him his BJJ black belt. No one has ever heard of this man, met this man, trained under this man, or promoted someone by this name to black belt. It is all a lie. I don’t understand where all of this animosity is coming from. I don’t doubt for a minute his credibility, the man is the real deal! all you have to do to find out is go see for yourself. The man is the best jiu-jitsu instructor I have ever seen. and he DOES know several different martial arts. not pieces, but the arts themselves. just go talk to him. he is a reasonable man. and is a great friend to those that know him. but all of this doesn’t surprise me, people have been doing this kind of thing to Dan Inosanto for yrs saying that he does not teach true jkd. and all you have to do is watch the man in action and train with him to find out for yourself. The criticism just made him stronger and more determined. Sifu Shields has gained about 20 new students this past week, and its directly related to this bull sh*t. all of his credentials are real. But just because you question them remember this; Bruce Lee never had a black belt or a certificate but did that take away from his knowledge? Absolutely not! I think people put way too much emphasis on a piece of paper and not actual knowledge. Go talk to the man and find out for yourself how nice he is and how knowledgeable he is.
55. Submitted by strangle on Friday December 16, 2011 8:53 AM
Nobody cares if he is a good instructor, which I am sure he is not….We care that he lied about his black belt. Bruce Lee didnt go around telling people he had a black belt in an art that he did not have a black belt in…he let his abilities speak for themselves. Shields should do the same. If he is as good an instructor as you claim, then why does he need to lie about having a black belt in BJJ?
56. Submitted by Whoever on Friday December 16, 2011 10:00 AM
Actually Bruce Lee was a black belt under Ip Man. And Dan Inosanto trained with Bruce Lee for many years as Bruce’s top student. Who would ever say that Dan Inosanto doesn’t teach real JKD? He was Bruce’s number 1 student. And yes, Bruce Lee trained under Ip Man his whole life.Do your research son. Knowledge is not the question. Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto can tell you who their teachers are. That’s the issue here.

Scott Shields is not a BJJ black belt. He may have got certificates to teach JKD stuff years ago but nobody cares. Those are not the issue. The issue is he either bought or completely faked his BJJ black belt. No other BJJ instructor in NC has ever heard of Marcus Renato (who supposedly sold Shields a black belt after a fee private lessons…that’s the story Shields himself tells/admits). M. Renato does not even exist. Notice how at the same time Scott put his profile on this site, he also put up a profile for the fictional Marcus Renato? Shields is a fraud.

It seems the fictional Marcus Renato profile has been removed and rightfully so. Oh a typo previously I meant “a few private lessons” Another bit of info. Shields was seen wearing and touted himself as a BJJ purple in 2006. Then suddenly started calling himself a BJJ black belt in mid 2006. Skipped over brown belt completely. He’s a BJJ fraud and fake black belt.

I wll not be responding anymore on this site because I have already given my number to anyone who wants to talk. Lineage: I have several, the one I am assuming you mean is this one. me, Renato, estrada, Carlson Sr. Yes I did go from four stripe purple to black. Lots of people skip ranks after holding belts for long periods ot time. Mine was purple of 7 years. Call me whatever you want. I did pay for lesssons and a exam fee of course! Pay for a belt? No. I love BJJ and love training/teaching all of my students and have for over twenty years. They are loyal, caring, intelligent people. I worked very hard for all my ranks, mostly my JKD ranks under Dan Inosanto. Ask yourself, why would I need to make up ANY rank after being ranked by Sifu Inosanto/Hartsell/Paulson/Bustle/Bain/Kelly etc…? Makes any no sense. If you don’t like this or think it is untrue. Don’t train with me. That’s cool. Everyone has an opinion.

I have trained under Scott Shield for 5 1/2 years and can attest to the fact that his experience and training is quite extensive. Go to his school, ask him questions about any BJJ move you can think of and he will be able to show you every nuance of that move and what the counters are to it. He will also be demonstrate what new variations of those moves are since he is constantly studying and evolving with the art. I am constantly asking questions about different situations and scenarios that could arise in real life. Without hesitation, he can show you multiple responses from numerous martial arts and they ALL work. He can also explain the benefits and detriments of each particular response. I have continued my training for so long under Scott Shields because he not only is a true martial artist, but he is an educator. As others have stated, he can break down technique and explain it kids, beginning adults or experienced martial artists. I have seen him teach seminars and other well accomplished martial artists with national reputations walk away with knowledge and technique they never had before. Go to his school if you have doubts and let him walk you through his lineage as he offered above and has offered many times before. If I were in his shoes, I would not send any information over the internet either. You will just take it, alter it and use it to spread more hate. Either be a man and have the courage to meet THE MAN in person or go away. It is as simple as that.

Real martial artists don’t need to lie about their accomplishments. If you’re a JKD guy, be a JKD guy. Don’t pretend to be a something you are not. Dont lie to people and take their money.Dont market yourself as a BJJ expert when you are not.Its pretty obvious by looking at the videos of Scott’s students rolling, that they are not getting good instruction in BJJ. The simple fact of the matter is Scott is a liar and a fraud.

Where is my black belt you ask Scott? I’ll tell you…it’s in the cave in Brazil where Renato is hiding out hahahaha. But seriously, if I was asked to prove my lineage it would be very, very simple. Helio Gracie/Rickson Gracie>Pedro Sauer>Ricky Lundell>Me. That was pretty easy now wasn’t it? So explain why locating Renato, or ANYONE how knows him, is so hard? Maybe because he is a fiction of your imagination?

Why does Scott name-drop everyone he has trained with EXCEPT the guys his BJJ background? Instead of mentioning Dan Inosanto in EVERY POST, why not mention the great Marcus Renato. Name drop Renato! This is a BJJ web site , not JKD. You have a black belt in BJJ!!!!!Be proud!! Pictures of Renato should be all over your school and site!! Now ,it took us months to finally get sifrauds lineage – Sifraud>Renato> Estrada> carlson Jr. I bet it took him this long because he had to do some research to find BJJ blackbelt under Carlson Jr. And I got some serious money on Estrada being dead. How convenient for Sifruad.

Words, words, words, words, words……. Concerned over dilution of BJJ knowledge and technique or just want to learn how to defend yourself and your family on the street or submit an opponent on the mat? There’s a really, REALLY easy way to find out if Scott Shields knows as much as a BJJ black belt should. Actually train with the actual man. His real school is in a real town, Matthews NC. No hearsay from me or anyone else can give you what you need. He’s great! He sucks! Whatever, dude. If he doesn’t stack up – or if he does – you won’t have words, or certificates, or belts, or threads, or websites. You will have first hand experience of your proof. Enough words, words, words, words….

SiFraud, you never mentioned an Estrada until now. Is he real or is he hiding out with Renato and the yeti in Brazil?? Ya know my daddy told me once “the first thing you should do when you’ve dug yourself into a hole is stop digging.” You might want to think about that.

Shields does throw Dan Inosanto’s name out every time he posts. Wonder why he is not listed by Inosanto as an instructor on Inosanto’s website. Now back to the BJJ Black Belt, who else skip ranks and gets awarded a black belt? He claims it is common. Is it?

Nobody needs to go to your school to know you are lying about your BJJ ranking and lineage.

The name Estrada was briefly mentioned in a precious frozen thread elsewhere. On Carlson Gracie Sr list of his black belts there is a Marcel Laguna Duque Estrada. Perhaps someone connected with Carlsons team or Carlson Jr can look into contacting Estrada and in turn ask about Renato. I’m sure Renato doesn’t exist and Shields just picked an obscure name off of Sr.’s black belt list. As someone mentioned Estrada has probably passed away but hopefully not and Simone can track him down in Brazil. Even if Renato does exist (he doesn’t) Shields says he went from NC down to SC to “take a few private lessons and test” and that it was “very expensive” which is just a front for buying a belt from some random BJJ BB that visited SC. Shields what was Renato doing in SC? What school was he visiting in SC? Did you go to see him in SC or did je come to NC to see you? Also, you previously stated you do have an actual picture of Renato but when you have never ever offered that pic as supporting evidence. You are not a BJJ BB.

Oh he posted the pics alright. Only problem is that “Renato” looked like an overweight mexican, not a brazilian. And he was also wearing a Judo gi that was at least 2 sizes too small if I remember correctly. It was good for a few laughs for sure.

Oh I saw the joke/fake pic and cert he everyally put up. They were so fake and made so recently and I think he’s smart enough to not try pass them off as real. But well before that he said many times he has a pic with Renato but refuses to show it (with a sincere claim that it’s real). What Shields is failing to grasp is that in private most if not all the other BJJ instructors know he’s not a real BJJ BB, but aren’t really interested in confronting him as they are not interested in the drama and just want to run their own business.

And most smart business people do not bad mouth the competition, which is why they are staying out of it, and I totally understand. Seriously though, how do you misspell RDJ and the cert is in English! Not only that, but Scott….you told us you got the belt in the states. So why is the “Cert” you posted from Rio??

Shields is a textbook fraud. Claiming rank under someone who cannot be found because he doesn’t exist. Yes, he does have some legit ranks under other instructors, but in private correspondence, even they are starting to distance themselves from him after seeing his conduct online. The house of cards is falling. There is no “Marcus Renato”, Shields is AT BEST a purple belt, and the word is spreading about his business practices. look him up with Better Business Bureau, you will see his grade: F. That says it all…

This man is a disgrace to martial arts. Someone questions his lineage and he responds with ” I used to train under Dan Inosanto, a JKD guy” Seriously? There is no further discussion. Why is this FRAUD listed here in a BJJ site and why hasn’t someone in the area stormed his fake ass.

I trained with Mr. Shields for a couple of years before leaving the awful city of Charlotte. Thats the only bad thing I can say, Charlotte and NC are awful suburban, ghetto dumps. Now with that being said Mr. Shields was an excellent instructor, a good man, and I learned quite a bit training with Mr. Shields. I also came with an extensive background in martial arts. Some of you all need to get a job and a life. Its been a while since I trained with Mr. Shields and this bashing is all new to me. He is an excellent instructor – attend some of his clinics and you will see. I mentioned I much I can’t stand Charlotte, because I left that superficial town and I live in another part of the country. So I am not writing this in vain. I remember great times and learning great things from Mr. Shields , in fact , the school I attend currently is worthless, since I learned such great skills from Mr. Shields. Now look, if you all have nothing better to do than bash him , thats fine. But folks, get a freaking life – get a portfolio of stocks and day trade – there is more drama for you than this childish bashing

Btw – oil is going up after Israel flattens Iran. But some oil stocks and etf’s – make some money other than whining about martial art instructors. Plus Mr. Shields was well priced, obviously many of you who bash him and complain of his training couldn’t pay the bill. Gee, imagine that, americans complaining about paying a bill. Check his school out for a couple weeks before judging.
