Edson is the BEST instructor in the world! He is patient and supportive, always encouraging the students to be the best they can be. My son Daniel has grown and become more confident since learning Jiu Jitsu. I feel comfortable knowing that Edson instills important attributes in his students such as respect, loyalty and perserverence as well as the techniques which results in a love of the art of Jiu Jitsu.

Eddy is the best teacher in the world. He has the ability to impart the finer details of the techniques to his students. As a blue belt one stripe, I have grown in my understanding of the art. My confidence and ability in my Jiu Jitsu has excelled under Edson's coaching. I am more passionate about Jiu Jitsu now than when I first started.

Edson has been a fantastic addition to my 6.5 years old life. Not only does he teach the kids respect for the sport but reminds them with every lesson that they need to make lifestyle choices, whether its healthy eating, respecting your elders, authority, and peers. This is all balanced with fun, fitness and encouragement. I look forward to introducing my 2 other boys to Edson's teachings through BJJ.

Edson is not only a fantastic couch, he is a role model. That if you put in the hours with anything in life you will be rewarded. His determination inspires the academy to train hard, but he is not afraid to have a bit of fun in the process. His detailed descriptions of the techniques have created a solid undertanding and respect for the Martial Art within the academy.

My son and I are extremely happy with Edson as our BJJ instructor. We recommend his dojo and classes to anyone who is interested. When we 1st moved to the area we had a lot of trouble finding a suitable instructor in any form or martial arts. But Edson ticks all the boxes - friendly but firm, detailed instructions and always makes it fun & safe for the kids.

My son Josh started with Edson and found the classes so much fun I started too!! Edson is the best instructor I have seen with Kids, it helps being a DAD himself and his Son & Daughter is in the class. Edson treats all the kids as if they where his own which I love to see as being a Dad too! Edson doesn't get angry, he is very percent and encouraging, as well as he talks to the kids about whats going on in there lives. I am very proud to recommend Edson for Kids and adult students. After doing other M. Arts and boxing Eeson is 1 in a Million

Ask Edson how many MMA and Muay Thai lessons he has had, the answer is zero. Ask Edson why he does not have his club compete in competitions. It is because the entire BJJ community in Sydney knows he is a fraud. Dont take my word for it, just ask him

37. Submitted by Cory Wyllie-Gray on Friday December 21, 2012 7:47 AM
To "This guy is not legit", if you knew what you were talking about you would know that Edson Ortiz does not specialise in muay thai or mma. He is a BJJ instructor therefore your comment about him not doing MMA or muay thai is irrelevant. Also I have represented Edson's centre in competition so your statement about that is a lie. You should get your facts straight before you try and ruin someones reputation amongst students of his. He is a great instructor, mentor and person. And of course you would post your comments anonymously like a coward.

38. Submitted by hugh mann on Friday December 21, 2012 5:44 PM
Dear Cory, I seem to have touched a nerve .. If, as you state, Edson is a BJJ coach then why does he teach Thai Boxing and MMA at his academy? Why does his striking coach no longer train anywhere else? Why does Edson no longer train anywhere else to improve his skills? If he is so great why was he kicked out of the Machado organisation? Why did he last all of 10-15 seconds in the last competition he was in? Why has he had to set up a relationship with a black belt in Brazil ? (hint, its because every school who has interacted with him cannot stand him) Perhaps you should review your facts The last time his club competed in a comp was about two years ago. Perhaps you have only ever trained with one person at one school and so your view is somewhat biased. Thoguhts ??

39. Submitted by Luke on Friday December 21, 2012 7:59 PM
To hugh man, it sounds like you are the one that needs to get their facts straight. Ortiz Academy recently competed in the 2012 June NSW BJJ competition. The Ortiz Academy placed 5th out of 32 Schools. All the academies that came ahead of Ortiz had combined points from several schools. They came 5th in total with just the one school. So not have they competed in the most recent competition, they smashed it. Edson has Mai Thai and MMA instructors at his gym as he is a BJJ instructor . It really sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder mate, but you are hiding behind fake names on a public forum and throwing around fake accusations. How brave of you.

40. Submitted by hugh man on Saturday December 22, 2012 2:42 AM
Mai Tai instructors ?? Perhaps he is working on his cocktail skills? So your school didnt compete at the September and November federation events ? or the events BJJ comps ? If you have been training with him for a while what happens after you get blue ? There is no more room for promotion ? Perhaps if other schools held their blue belts back for years they might do OK in comps as well ? BTW as for hiding behind fake names Luke doesnt really say a lot either. As per prior posts perhaps just check some facts and ask Edson why the rest of the BJJ community has a chuckle at his expense. Before you come flaming back with other ill conceived comments, again, as per prior posts, just ask the questions of Edson I have put forward (or do you believe the hype you dont need a black belt head instructor) Please dont bother replying to this, just simply ask the questions and open your eyes

41. Submitted by Luke Livingstone-Powell on Saturday December 22, 2012 8:07 PM
Grow up Hugh Man, you sound like a jealous school kid, this site is ment for positive comments not slander. Why would you even care if Edson was not who says he is? You must be very unhappy with your own life to put so much time and energy into such childish immature comments. What's it going to be next? My dads car goes faster than your dads car? My dads more of a super hero than your dad? That's how you sound. If you you don't like what someone else doing, just simply don't have anything to do with them. It's that easy.

42. Submitted by Luke chard on Saturday December 22, 2012 8:30 PM
So let me get this straight - you have come onto this site throwing down false accusations about the Ortiz academy with no proper evidence or facts to back you up. You firstly said that the academy hasn't competed in a competition in over two years to be proven wrong. Secondly saying that the academy has no proper MMA and Muay Thai instructors only to be proven wrong yet again. Now you are having a stab at his reputation? How pathetic, and I guess you are hiding under anonymous so that your reputation doesn't get tarnished. Well good on you.

43. Submitted by hugh mann on Saturday December 22, 2012 10:25 PM
So you have ignored any of the points put forward; 1) Ask him why he does not compete 2) Ask him why his instructors dont compete and arent overly experienced 3) Ask him why he was booted out of the Machado organisation 4) Ask him why his school has only competed once in two years (if this is in fact as you say), there are roughly 8-10 amateur BJJ tournaments every year 5) Ask him why he had to create an affiliation with a black belt instructor in Brazil(hint, you are not generally permitted to call yourself an instructor at purple belt) 6) Ask why the NSW BJJ federation finds him the lauging stock of the industry. 7) If he is so good why does no one in the media do any stories on him 8) If your instructors are top notch why are there no details on the website of their achievements 9+) I can go on and on if you like Your only responses so far have been on an emotional level and you dont seem to want to review the facts. All you can come back with is personal attacks as you dont seem interested in finding out the reality You complain that this website is for positive comments only, all I have said is ask him a few questions and find out for yourself. He is the self promoting individual claiming he is amongst Australia's best instructors as per this website. You dont think a balanced view is appropriate ? As usual the best you have is personal insults, seriously guys, try a decent school and you may then work it out Its nice he has such fanbois, its just the defence of him is a little rabid and sad. Please dont bother replying as I am sure you will have nothing intelligent to add to the conversation

44. Submitted by Luke Chard on Sunday December 23, 2012 3:05 AM
Let me just quickly clarify something. I have not once insulted you I have just made a point to say that you are hiding behind a computer so that Edson can't find out who you are. Ok so I will keep this brief. 1) Edson was unable to compete for a while due to a neck injury but has been competing again. 2) The Instructor has fights on a regular basis. 3)I'm unaware what a political situation between Edson and this organisation has to do with his ability as a trainer. 4) Again I'm not even sure I you have read my reply before, the school competes on a regular basis and the latest one was in June. As you had previosly said the school hasn't competed in over 2 years. 5) Maybe it is because she is the number one BJJ fighter in the world in her weight division - and also your facts aren't up to date again. Edson is a brown belt. 6) You seem very good at producing these throw away rumors without ever giving evidence. 7) I'm not sure what being in the media has to do with his ability as an instructor. 8) That's actually a good point - they should update that section. 9+) So instead of asking questions on this public forum, why don't you give him a call Hughy. I'm sure he will enlighten you on any questions you have. Again never had a personal attack just corrected the information you have provided. You are saying that his gym is not top notch but maybe you should try it? Might enjoy yourself. Well as much as I enjoy wasting my holidays chatting I'm going to get back to enjoying it. So if you have any further questions please just go straight to Eddy. Merry Christmas

45. Submitted by hugh mann on Sunday December 23, 2012 5:10 AM
Finally, some coherent conversation/points. We will just have to disagree, I have been involved with Edson before, have tried a few other schools and found much better ones are in the area, both from instructor quality and credibility. Perhaps you can try a few other schools and broaden your horizons :} lets leave it at that

WTF is going on ere ill back edson 100% edson has trained my son for over three years now .Since then he has been to at least six tournaments , each time has been in the top three placings and received a medal , at bjj events and federation his first round out of five , as a third stripe white belt choked out a so called green belt at the age of 7 (how can a fucken 7yr old be green belt or you just scamed his parents for all extra gradings he was never eligable for ) that kid probably quit now ?? who ever created a red belt for children ???oh more gradings therefore more money !! then beat every other kid from :gracie , machado and roots. then to be beaten by a 9yr old in the final a kids two years older ,, thats fair ??. ORTIZ kids and teens combined actually was placed 1st in the last BJJ FEDERATION tournament in november and 5th outright in june ..congratulations to EDSON Since i have started training BJJ these last 12 months ive been to 2 nsw bjj federation tournaments in 2012 in which I was lucky to have enough competitors there anyway ,i had to fight guys 5 to 7 yrs younger plus a couple of kgs heavier ,and dominated opponents from MACHADO ,GRACIE and ROOTS.to receive a gold and silver medal thanks to EDSON. so hopefully these kids and teens from ORTIZ MMA continue to dominate these comps into adulthood , which they will, through EDSONS passion and dream. we will get to prove this on the mats , and ill garentee you HUGH MAN we will be there cheeers merry xmas

Not worth wasting time discussing this topic with" hugh mann". Only cowards make slanderous remarks and hide behind anonymity. If his remarks were credible he would not have hidden his identity through these postings. His views are irrelevant and his comments are false. We know what a great instructor Eddy is and all those associated with his academy have benefited and excelled through his teachings. We don't have to justify ourselves to this person who is obviously jealous because of his short comings. Grow up "hugh mann" and do something meaningful with your life.

48. Submitted by Nick Chase Berry on Wednesday December 26, 2012 6:01 PM
Edson is one of the greatest coaches I've had. To try and discredit him by making reference to which association he belongs to or the colour of his belt, is irrelevant. Nothing can contradict the passion and professionalism of Edson's teaching methods or his general philosophy towards life. To clarify on a few of Hugh mann's supposed point about Edson. 1)As has already been said, Edson had suffered a neck injury and was unable to compete for a long time. 2)His Mauy Thai instructor has fought in many Mauy Thai competitions. 3)His affiliation with the Machado organization is inconsequential. Ortiz Martial Arts is an affiliate of a 7 X World champion who visits the academy every year and who's last seminar attracted over 60 BJJ practitioners, a large portion of which came from 4 other non-affiliated schools. 4)The academy competes on a regular basis. They always have a strong presence and their competitors always achieve highly, recently winning the 1st place trophy in the kids division at the NSW BJJ Federation Summer Challenge. (Cannot wait to see these young competitors in practice in a few years time). 5)As was mentioned at point 3. 6)"Ask him why he is the laughing stock of the NSW BJJ Federation". It is quite hard to take this question serious after the recent success of Edson's team at the Summer Challenge. If he is the laughing stock of the NSW BJJ Federation, then they have just lost the kids division to such a person. The kids being the future of BJJ would suggest that the "laughing stock" will continue to be successful in the future. 7)As has been mentioned, the media's coverage of Edson does not reflect his ability as an instructor. 8)What does listing achievements on a website equate to? Nothing, it is merely a way someone tries to garner a reputation. Edson's reputation is built around the way he teaches and the effective techniques that have seen his team gain so much success. 9)Of course their will be an emotional response when a anonymous individual attempts to discredit one's mentor on a public forum. To argue otherwise is testament to the illogical and vexatious comments made about Edson. Everyone is aware this is a thinly veiled attempt to discredit a man who has proven he is more than capable of teaching great BJJ. just a few points as to the endeavors Edson goes to as an instructor: In August/September of this year Edson took six of his students on a 2 week training tour of Brazil. During this trip, the boys trained BJJ, Mauy Thai and MMA at some of the top gyms in Brazil. They trained with none other than former Chute Boxe Academy MMA star Jose Landi-Jons (Pele), as well as many fighters from the highly successful Bellator MMA organization. This was an invaluable experience for all involved and one which Edson wishes to continue annually. Who can really deny that this is evidence of a great and passionate teacher?

Edson is a Brazilian jiu jitsu Technician he has the Personal & Professional Attributes with the correct method of training put in place to turn anybody no matter what your level is into a weapon, At the ortiz academy you will develop a stronger mind and body, become more aware on how to deal with real life situations and will make a significant improvement while training BJJ in such a short space of time, Edson really knows how to "Teach" and goes out of his way to target individuals when they require Help or extra Mentoring about the techniques shown. Classes are interactive and FUN you make friends for life and as a student i am satisfied that the BJJ being passed onto me is of high quality as a result i have become more confidence and gained knowledgeable se;f defence that i will have for the rest of my life i look forward to continue my training with Edson .

My God, Why all the negative comments about edson? The guy is just trying to teach. I have previously trained and taught edson Brazilian Jiu jitsu and at the time I was a blue belt with a couple of purple stripes( my coach was black belt at the time- however he turned out to be knob in the end and is probably one of those attacking Edson). Now to clarify in the early days of BJJ in Australia we did not have allot of high ranking belts and getting to blue, or purple meant sometimes you were in a position to teach. Edson as far as I have known him has had some sort of neck injury which restricted him in his training and on occassion he would be tapping early to avoid injuring his neck, can you blame him. He always gave his best though. I never thought of him as a laughing stock, in fact everyone at the gym always spoke highly of him. From what I can see here from some of these negative posts, it appears some people may be jealous of his success as a trainer and small business owner, and to hear of trainers high up in the bjj federation laughing at him or seeing him as a joke indicates to me there must be some Ego's being dented. Yes unfortunately the old adage "leave your ego at the door" does not seem to have carried through over the years, and those instructors joking about Edson and his success have some issues themselves that they need to deal with, take a good look in the mirror. BJJ is about sharing knowledge and skill, the more teaching and sharing the merrier in my opinion.
